Panic Disorder

overview

What is Panic Disorder?

Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent panic attacks, and fears of having more panic attacks. The fear of panic attacks starts to impact an individuals functioning. Having panic attacks does not necessarily mean you have panic disorder.

Individuals with panic disorder often start to become hyper-aware of physical sensations that remind them of a panic attack. Something as simple as exercise or an increased heart rate and breathing could trigger fears of a panic attack, which then sends you into a panic attack!

Individuals may start to avoid situations and activities that trigger these sensations, or endure them with anxiety. Panic disorder is often accompanied by agoraphobia, which is characterized by avoidance of situations where panic is likely and escape is difficult.
